ERNIE 5.1 is Baidu's closed frontier model and the first of its line to be taken seriously outside China. The interesting claim is efficiency: it was trained at a small fraction of the usual cost, which is why it can be priced the way it is. It is strong in Chinese, competent in English, and carries a shorter context window than most of the models it now sits beside.
